Devon Writers Retreat

This is where I want you to come and enjoy some sea air and writerly inspiration with me.

Devon Writers Retreat

Teignmouth is only three hours on the train from London and yet you will feel transported to another world. My house is a few steps from the beach, where the brave swim daily even in winter.

We are opposite Keats House and a few doors down from a bookshop, art galleries, independent shops and cafes and pubs with seats on the beach. We are eight minutes’ walk from the station, with connections to Exeter, Clapham Junction and Paddington as well as direct lines to Birmingham and Reading.

Each room is equipped with a king size bed and an antique writing desk. One of them belonged to my grandmother who was a prolific children's author. You can see her books alongside hundreds of others on the bookshelves throughout the house. Downstairs there’s a comfy lounge and a long dining table where you can write as well as eat.

My retreats cost £450 for three nights and four full days (four nights also possible for £50 extra and writers eat out on the last night). It's all inclusive, fully catered with all linen and toiletries provided. Highlights include morning tea in bed, roaring fires and bracing beach walks.

I can also do single nights from £60 (no meals included but available at extra cost), for when you just need to get away from it all and get on with what fills you with joy (which is writing, by the way).

I advertise specific dates periodically but if you'd like to come with a few writer friends get in touch with your dates and we can fix something up! Currently the available weekends are 11 July, 15 August and 25 September 2026.

I look forward to seeing you here one day soon! Below are some recent testimonials from happy customers.

'Dear Lucy, I’ve only just had the chance to reflect on my time at yours. It was truly one of the best things I have done for myself! in a long time. I feel so much lighter now and very pleased with my progress on the story. Thank you for letting me stay in your beautiful home and for looking after me so well. Already scheming to come again next year' AB May 2026

I’ve been on Lucy’s writing retreat three times now and I’m already excited for my next visit. Every experience has been both wonderful and productive. Lucy’s home is absolutely beautiful, the location is stunning and the food is incredible. We’ve shared so many great laughs, and honestly, there’s not a single thing I would change. Lucy is the perfect hostess because as a writer herself, she really understands what you need. There is peace and quiet to work, delicious food and a feeling of being totally spoilt. She even went the extra mile and leant us swimming gear when the weather was unseasonably warm. JC 2025

This was a fabulous retreat in Lucy’s gorgeous historical home in the heart of Teignmouth. Close to the beach for inspirational outdoor writing, then in for a dip, and bubbles by the water at the end of the day was blissful. And for those seeking a little more adventure, it’s close to the southwest coastal trails taking you across some of the most beautiful countryside along the Jurassic Coast of southern England. A short ferry ride across the estuary to lovely Sheldon and you’re on your way. Always fun to swim with Sammy the Seal at Maidencombe Beach. Allow yourself plenty of time to write, lots of spaces in Lucy’s home. And to top it all, Lucy’s fabulous gourmet cooking satisfies the appetite for plenty of creativity each day. Highly recommended. "The best writing retreat I've ever attended! Lucy made us all feel so welcome and her home is comfortable and inspiring - perfect for an immersive writing retreat. The location of Teignmouth is picturesque with the option for sea air filled walks if you need a break to clear your head. The food was delicious and the fact that all the meals were catered for allowed me to relax and focus completely on my writing. The evening meals were a great time to chat and reflect on the creative process, and we had lots of laughs too. All in all, I came back inspired and refreshed. Would highly recommend this writing retreat to anyone.' Sinead, November 2024

'My stay at Lucy’s fulfilled my every idea of what a retreat would be. So much writing achieved, cosy book talk and walks on the beach, I can’t wait to go back.' J Sutherland, November 2024

'Perfect spot to get your head down and do lots of writing! The house is gorgeous and tranquil, the sea is a short walk away, and Lucy is a fabulous host. Fantastic weekend away working on my manuscript' BB, November 2024

Had the most incredible stay at Lucy’s home in Teignmouth. Her house was tranquil, cozy, and filled with inspiration - it was the perfect environment for our writers retreat. We took breaks with walks around the quaint seaside town and curled up with fireside wine in the evenings. Our stay was made even more special with Lucy’s mouth watering cooking and extraordinary hospitality. Can’t wait to return!' SJ, November 2024
